If you were sipping a cold drink in Chicago or St. Louis in the late 1800s, there was a high chance you were drinking a frozen chunk of Niles. We weren’t just a town; we were literally exporting winter to the rest of the Midwest. 🧊❄️
The Hunter Brother’s operation on Barron Lake was among the first and most significant commercial ice harvests in Michigan. They used to harvest thousands of tons of ice from Barron Lake, pack it in March Hay, and ship it on trains all over the country.
Bonus fact: The Michigan Central Railroad used Hunter Brothers ice almost exclusively in their dining cars specifically because of its clarity and lack of pollutants.
